Please join us for the next in our series of OCI Public Talks where we are delighted to welcome author Hugo Wong who will talk about the experience of Chinese migrants in North America in the early 20th Century.

About the talk:

The early Chinese migrants in the US faced a profound sense of alienation and a rapidly changing society. Rejected by the US Exclusion Act of 1882, many migrants moved south to Mexico, at a time when revolutions were about to take place in both China and their new host country. North and south of the border, those migrants were often pulled in opposite directions: tradition versus modernity, the cultures of their native versus their host country, and assimilation versus isolation. First treated differently in each of the US and Mexico, the migrants ultimately faced the same exclusion, responding to it with similar adaptability, resilience, and courage.

About the speaker:

Hugo Wong grew-up between Paris and Mexico city. From the early 1990s, he has lived 15 years in Greater China, including in Beijing, where he has worked on the founding of various Sino-foreign joint-ventures, such as China’s first investment bank. He is the author of the book The Lost Chinese: The rise and fall of a migrant family dream

The talk will be held online via MS Teams and the recording will be made available on the OCI website afterwards. For any queries, please email online-ci@open.ac.uk
