New 30 credit module in Beginners' Chinese open for registration!

We are delighted to announce that a new 30 credit module in Beginners’ Chinese is launching at The Open University.  This brand new module is now open for registration and will begin in October 2024.

This introductory course in Mandarin Chinese is taught online, using supported learning methods, and is designed for absolute beginners. It is carefully structured and designed to develop the skills you need to speak and understand basic Mandarin Chinese in everyday contexts such as work, leisure, family life and getting about. You’ll also learn how to read simplified characters and explore the geography and history of Chinese-speaking cultures.

The study resources include a dedicated website with a variety of activities with embedded audios and videos to promote autonomous learning, a print Workbook and a character learning app. Together, they’ll give you not just language-learning skills, but also a real feel for Chinese-speaking cultures. A designated tutor will support with tutorials and you’ll also have the opportunity for conversation practice with native speakers. The newly designed work book focuses on the learning of handwriting simplified Chinese characters. It also has a Learning for pleasure section in every unit to introduce interesting aspects of the Chinese script and culture, such as calligraphy, poetry and proverbs.
