Revisiting the Prompt: Critical AI Literacy for Language Educators: A day of keynote insights, active learning, and shared best practices

We are delighted to be co-organising another hybrid (online and in-person) training day with Lancaster University Confucius Institute. This teacher training day is for teachers of Chinese as Foreign Language, as well as teachers of other languages.

We currently have the following keynote sessions confirmed:

  • Professor Mirjam Hauck (The Open University) ‘AI Literacy for Social Justice and Inclusion: What does it mean for the Learning and Teaching of Languages and Cultures?’ (in-person)
  • Dr Kan Qian (The Open University), Prof Xu Xin (BFSU) and Dr Shi Lijing (LSE) ‘Critical and ethical use of GenAI: exploring Chinese Language Teachers’ Perception and Attitude’ (in-person)
  • Dr Neil McLean (LSE) ‘AI literacy as an extension of ‘normal’ language provision’. (in-person)
  • Professor Kate Borthwick (University of Southampton)  ‘Building confidence and agency: a whole-institution approach to AI Fluency’ (in-person)
  • Mr Joe Dale (Independent Consultant)  ‘Using AI to Support Vocabulary Learning Through Stories (online talk)

There will be lightning talks in the afternoon as well as an interactive session with a focus on prompt crafting for inclusive learning and teaching of languages and cultures. The session will take the shape of a mini Promptathon informed by the OU Framework for Critical AI Literacy Skills development.

  • 17.00 UK time on Monday 25th May if you are interested in presenting a lightning talk, to allow us to adjust the agenda and test connections.
  • 12.00 midday UK time on 28th May, for in-person and online participants, to allow us to adjust refreshments for in-person and to send registration links to online participants.
